Working together to correct misinformation

How we work with online platforms and other organisations

The Australian members of the Electoral Council of Australia and New Zealand (ECANZ) signed a Statement of Intent about electoral management arrangements for online platforms with Google, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok.

The Statement is designed to support Australian electoral management bodies and online platforms address breaches of:

  • Commonwealth, State and Territory electoral-related laws
  • online platforms' terms of service related to electoral integrity.

In addition to the Statement, we have specific escalation arrangements for elections to handle instances of incorrect information about electoral processes. These are with eSafety and the major online platforms, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, Reddit, Snap, Tencent, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter).

We have also worked closely with other regulators to provide voters with accurate information about electoral campaign material, including the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Local Government Inspectorate.

Reporting misinformation

If you are concerned about a specific piece of content you've seen on social media or on a digital platform, this may be covered by the platform's usage policies. We recommend that you report this directly to the platforms as well as letting us know through our Feedback and complaints page.
