Change of registered political party name – Libertarian Party

30 September 2026

For immediate release

The name of the registered political party Libertarian Party was officially changed today.

The party applied to change its name and abbreviation to:

Party name: Libertarian Party (formerly Liberal Democrats)

Abbreviation: Libertarian (formerly Liberal Democrats)

As required by section 49 of the Victorian Electoral Act 2002 (the Act), the Victorian Electoral Commission advertised the application and invited objections. One objection was received.

Certain names are not acceptable under the Act, including names that are the same as another registered political party, or formerly registered party.

The name Libertarian Party (formerly Liberal Democrats) and the party's proposed abbreviated name are acceptable under the Act and can be printed next to the party's endorsed candidates' names on ballot papers at any election contested by the party under the Act.
