An application by Free Palestine Party to register as a political party in Victoria has been refused.
The VEC was required to refuse the application from Free Palestine Party due to its name.
Under section 47 of the Electoral Act 2002 (Vic), the VEC must refuse an application to register a political party where the proposed name resembles the name of an unrelated recognised political party that it is likely to be confused with or mistaken for. In this case, the name of the Free Palestine Party resembled the name of the registered political party Free Palestine.
In accordance with the Act, a political party refused registration is not eligible to re-apply to be registered as a political party for a period of 6 months.
