The register of electors contains personal enrolment information about Victorian electors including name, address, date of birth and gender information. Protecting the privacy of this information is very important to the VEC. The Information Privacy Act 2000 regulates how this information is collected and handled.
The VEC has a 'joint roll' arrangement with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC, external link). The collection of personal information at the time of enrolment is justified partly by Commonwealth law and partly by Victorian law. To maintain the register of electors, the VEC and the AEC share information from electors and from third party sources in order to maintain the accuracy of the register of electors. This information may be used and disclosed by the AEC differently than it is by the VEC because of differences between Commonwealth and Victorian law.
