To stand in an election you need to first nominate as a candidate. Every eligible person has the right to stand to election, as formalised in Section 18 of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.
"Every eligible person has the right, and is to have the opportunity, without discrimination ... to have access, on general terms of equality, to the Victorian public service and public office."
The next State election will be on Saturday, 29 November 2014.
The next scheduled local council general elections will be held on Saturday, 27 October 2012. If you are interested in nominating to stand as a candidate at a local council election, please read nominating for local council elections.
A by-election occurs when a member of the State Legislative Assembly (Lower House) or a councillor in a single-councillor ward resigns, or is unable to complete their term.
The requirements for nominating in State by-elections and local by-elections are exactly the same as the those for nominating for State elections and local council elections.
